Alkek Library is excited to share the recent accomplishment of our own Sheila Torres-Blank. Sheila is the music cataloger here at Alkek by day, but in her free time, she becomes a truly amazing athlete.
This past April, Sheila completed the Arizona Trail Race that follows the Arizona Trial, a multi-use trail stretching from the Mexican border to Utah. There are two events, the full 750 mile border to border race and a 300 mile race. Sheila completed the 750 which also includes a 22 mile mandatory portage through the Grand Canyon. The Kaibab Trail is closed to biking so racers must hike through carrying their disassembled bikes and gear.
This is a self-supported bike race with no pre-arranged or outside help permitted other than the option to mail a box to a Post Office along the route. Racers carry ultralight camping gear and everything necessary to maintain themselves and their bikes on the course. Racers also carry gps tracking devices for safety and to insure completion of the course.
This year, 17 people started the 750 and six finished. Sheila’s time was 15 days, 10 hours making her one of only two women who have ever finished the 750!
Please join those of us who are in awe of this feat to congratulate Sheila for this huge achievement.
